Health Disparities in COVID-19 Data
Dr. Hina Shaikh
Dr. Shaikh has strong background in Gender and Ethnic Studies and a keen interest in AI, data science, and feminism. As PI, all projects explores how surveillance and technology impact marginalized communities
Data Justice Lab
I joined the Data Justice Lab, part of the Gender Studies Department at the University of Florida, during my sophomore fall after taking a course with Dr. Shaikh. Since then, I’ve been actively involved in bridging the gap between technology and the humanities, aligning with the lab’s core mission.

Research Focus
Project Responsibilities
At the start of my Junior year, I began working on the Health Disparities in COVID-19 Data Project, which investigates how health disparities manifest across different communities served by UF Health. This research leverages data from UF Health’s operations in diverse settings, including Gainesville, Jacksonville, and rural areas. By analyzing data from these varied environments, I aim to explore disparities based on gender, race, and their intersections in relation to COVID-19's impact and persistence. Additionally, I am examining how social determinants of health affect different age groups within various racial communities affected by the virus.
In this project, I am responsible for employing statistical comparison models to assess the significance of race, gender, and their combinations as predictors of COVID-19's impact. I plan to use HiperGator, UF's high-performance computing system, to handle and analyze the large dataset. This will enable me to conduct in-depth comparisons and make predictions about future health disparities, thereby providing valuable insights into how these factors influence the course and outcomes of the pandemic.
